How long should it take for US politics to leave behind 20th values that are outdated and essentially non-sensical and to move on to 21st century values that we hold today?

I'm pretty young, I was born in the late 90's (not saying when, but I'm still in school). And I was just wondering this, since I'm just getting into politics moreso recently, I was wondering when this shift could/will happen to the political world.
With Trump being elected, I'm honestly quite scared for what's going to happen to my generations future due to the way the Republican Party is handling everything poorly and not up to the current times, the same could be said for the Democrats.
I'm from the Pacific Northwest, so, I'm in a democratic state, I was raised to be good and empathetic to people. I'm just very unsure about what the future holds for me and others for the next few years.
