How do I sell a stock certificate?

I have some stock (not very much) in a holding company that my family set up for me decades ago. It's really doing me no good there, and I'd like to liquidate it. Unfortunately I have no idea how. The holding company has an option for me to withdraw from the plan, whereupon they'll send me the share certificate.
...What do I do with that? Can I take it to the bank and sell it? I have no idea, which is embarrassing given that I'm in my thirties.
I live in Canada, if that matters.
