On my own page, why does Facebook show me those 9 friends?

On the left side of my own page it show 9 of my friends. Some of them I talk to regularly, but others I haven't spoken to in over a year (on Facebook, of course). Is the choices decided by who is viewing my page and people I'm interacting with? How do they choose those 9 people?
