What does the K mean in a "50K Marathon"?

I know that k after a number means thousand (from Greek kilo), but "50K Marathons" seem to be an American thing, and most people here aren't really that familiar with metric, so I don't think it's kilometers. When people say "I ran a 50k," 50k what?
