Why does chess continue to fascinate us?
Post Body

The game is not solved, but mathematically it is very well understood. There is always a set of ≥1 "best moves" in any board state. The game itself is complex, but it's finite. Nothing changes. There is no probability, no private information.

Yet we're obsessed with it. Here in the West it's our favourite board game. Chess skill is viewed as equivalent to overall intelligence.

Why? Why do we love it so much? And why do we revere Magnus and Fabi and Gukesh?
