How did people get national news (e.g. election results) in the early 1800s?

The US didn’t really have a comprehensive telegraph network until the 1860s, and the first radio broadcast wasn’t until 1906. Even taking into account that the country was smaller back then, if all you have is a bunch of horses and some primitive trains, it seems like it would take weeks to cover the country, and months to get the news back to Europe.
