How does money grow from stocks ?

I have no clue about financial knowledge but I always keep hearing from YouTube financial gurus that it is never a good idea to keep money in bank account. You have to think about long term invest in stock market and safe options for beginners are s&p 500 and etfs. Now I don’t understand how does money grow over time? What is CDs and buying gold.
