Is there any reason beyond alcohol that someone would need a horizontal ID in the United States?

Post Body

I just turned 21 today, but I donā€™t want to drink any alcohol.

A few months ago, I passed my driving test, so I had the opportunity to get a driverā€™s license. Since I was under 21 at the time, I got a vertical license with big red letters that said ā€œUNDER 21 UNTIL (date)ā€. I wanted to get a REAL ID as well, since I knew the deadline was coming up and I wanted to get it out of the way, but my parents told me to wait until I turned 21 so that I could have a horizontal ID. I wasnā€™t sure why they cared, since I have made it clear that I donā€™t want to drink alcohol.

Of course, since Iā€™m 21, this problem doesnā€™t matter anymore. Iā€™m going to try to get the REAL ID as soon as possible. Anyway, my question is: is there any reason outside of buying alcohol or other drugs that my parents made me wait to get a REAL ID?
