Why/how/when did we decide that profile pictures on sites like reddit, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc. would be circular instead of square? Are circles just cooler?

Kinda random, but I am just sitting here pondering why things are the way they are, as one does sometimes, and it just caught my attention, it seems like it has spread throughout social media as a background norm that doesn't even get noticed.
