Why are games now getting seasons and battlepasses?
Post Body

Are games required to have seasons upon release? This is a major turn-off for me, as I dislike the focus on seasons and battle passes. Dota 2 pioneered the battle pass concept with the Compendium, and many companies have since adopted this model, releasing frequent season-based battle passes. However, games like Dota 2 and CS:GO initially only released battle passes for special events like The International, which I believe is a more sustainable approach for the longevity of the game.

Let me regroup my thoughts. I view the battlepass as an event where players enjoy the game by playing and acquiring cosmetic items for their favorite characters. This also serves as a platform for developers to showcase their design prowess in creating visually appealing cosmetics.

Traditionally, the battlepass has been an annual event, building anticipation for the next iteration with its unique events, skins, and rewards. However, many gaming companies now opt for a monthly battlepass model. This frequent release cycle often results in the release of mediocre skins and the constant resetting of player ranks. This constant grind for rank progression detracts from the original purpose of ranks: to serve as a meaningful indicator of player skill and improvement
