I've been learning a bit recently about the wars between Protestants and Catholics in Europe and it was interesting to learn how they actually underpinned very secular political issues like the authority of the church over nations, and things like the divine right of kings. Is there anything like that about modern day conflicts in Africa and the Middle East? There always seems to be so much violence and conflict between people based on if they're Sunni or Shia I can't believe it all just comes down to some minor differences between interpreting religious scripture.
