Can immigration from another country tell if you have a record just by your passport?

So I have a disorderly conduct conviction on my record and I plan to visit South Korea during a layover if they ask if I have a record and I say no would they ever actually be able to find out if I was lying or not Because when I visited Japan last they told me next time I enter to just say I don't have a record.
