The herd main goal in the movie was to deliver the baby back to the human tribe before they make it through the pass because then the herd can reach them. The baby brings the best out of Manfred, Sid and Diego. Roshan taught Manfred to forgive the humans for hunting his wife and child. It's taught Sid to get with people who wouldn't abandon him like what his family does to him every year and it's taught Diego to betray his pack because they don't care for him because Soto wouldn't of saved Diego from the lava like what Manfred did.
