Why do athletes always get a slap on the wrist for driving under the influence?

Ezra Mam was driving under the influence of cocaine which cause him to crash into a family causing a 4 year old girl to have her hip broken and who is likely to have permanent hip damage. The courts handled him a light sentence consisting of a $850 fine and being disqualified from driving for 6 months. The NRL have given him a 9 game suspension which is 1 game more than what Spencer Leniu got for calling him a monkey.
