Why do we not see hacks involving non-network connections? For example a malicious monitor hacking your PC over HDMI?

Is it possible to hack a monitor's firmware to serve malware via a display cable? If your PC can be hacked by crafting buffer overflows in specific software, is there anything preventing the same for occurring over a display signal with your graphics drivers?
This seems like a way to hack air-gapped systems, or have a virtually undetectable point to spread malware from i.e. a conference room projector, etc.
