Why can't I add a new person in google messenger without it creating a new text thread?

So I created a group chat using google messager. Then I wanted to add more people to the chat but when I try to add others it creates a brand new group chat where all the previous texts are lost. How do I add a new person to the group text without all the previously sent messages becoming deleted?
