I've heard it proposed that jury duty (US) should provide a minimum wage for the day. Given that people can walk in to serve, this could be a viable option to help get income to people in need. What are the downsides I'm missing?

Edited for summary: Wow, ok. I thought this was "no stupid questions", my apologies. I always thought that people could choose to show up and would be put in the juror selection pool, which is incorrect. Thank you to those who spoke with kindness.
