Why do people in movie cut their palm to draw blood?

In movies when a person wants to draw blood to drip, or to merge blood with someone else or many other multitude of reasons, they mostly cut their palm. Why is that? If I wanted or needed to draw blood I would not cut the soft flesh of my palm which would make my hand useless till it healed which could take up to a week.
