Why is a man having a relationship with a woman often treated as a prize of some sort?
Post Body

In many societies, it seems that a man having a close relationship with a woman is either a reward for the guy striving to win her affection and proving himself worthy of her or in others simply a reward for behaving well. It seems to be not common to simply leave it to the woman to decide she likes something about the man and for the man to gratefully return feelings. Why do so many people tend to treat having a relationship as a prize to win rather than simply the result of the man just being himself and the woman coming to like him from interacting and getting to know him?
