Why does the older generation have such a high regard for the expertise and informed opinions of doctors?

I have heard that, for instance, one way to get an older person to stop driving who is no longer capable of doing so safely is to have their doctor tell them to stop, because they generally have a higher regard for the word of their individual doctor than younger generations.
If this is so, why is this?
