How do corporations actually function?

Are they just too big to fail? Or do a small amount of people just end up doing all of the work?
My girlfriend works in the corporate world and the things she complains about has me wondering how anything gets done? How do these companies not die from the amount of incompetence, weaponized incompetence, and malicious compliance within?
