My childhood friend’s girlfriend passed away, what can I say other than “I’m sorry”?

We weren’t the closest but spent significant time together during our teenage years. He’s always been an amazing friend to me, one of the nicest dudes I’ve ever known.
I feel like hearing I’m sorry a bunch of times bothers some people after losing a loved one but idk
Would it better to just say I love you or something?
