Do they usually wipe the machine at the optometrist before you put your chin on it?

Had an eye exam today. Before I saw the doctor the person at the desk had me put my chin down on two of the machines and he didn't wipe it down beforehand (and he didn't wipe it after either). Is that typical? At previous places I'm sure they wiped it beforehand.
