Is/was this an actual thing somewhere?

A long while ago I read a book, either fiction or fantasy, and they mentioned that a trick that desert travelers would use is to put a pebble under your tongue and you wouldn't feel as thirsty because it stimulates the saliva gland there.
It makes complete sense. But is this an actual trick that was used in some place or time, or is this just something the author made up?
