Why is it that toxicity seems to be more effective than positivity?

For instance, it often seems more effective to gain support by attacking the opposing side in a conflict and pitting people against each other than it is to simply demonstrate the merits of your approach and get people to support you by showing them why your approach is better. Why is it that toxicity and stirring negativity has more effect?
