When mathematicians, physicists, astrophysicists etc. use math to prove a concept, what is the “answer” they are looking for?
Post Body

I rewatched interstellar last night and a question was raised in my mind. In the B plot of the film one of the characters is working relentlessly to solve the “gravity equation”. So, when people like that are using math to try and solve something, are they generally trying to construct mathematical proofs? Or are they looking for a certain number? What exactly is the answer?
