Why do people on some subreddits such as r/confessions try to go out of their way to convince the OP that they are not a bad person, when most of the time they are?

For example, there was this post where the OP was a high-school bully and had driven 3/5 students to die. Yet everyone in the comment thread tried to convince OP that they are not a bad person. Why is that?
