Can you actually own anything?

I guess this is more philosophical than anything, but it seems like “ownership” is an illusion. You buy a house, but the government wants to build a railway through the area, then oops it’s theirs now.
It seems like anything you can be taken from you so is your ability for true ownership directly linked to your ability to defend it at all costs?
