How do you know if you still have glass in your skin or if it's just the wound hurting?

I stepped on glass, and I picked at it for a bit, but I didn't see anything. It hurts when I walk on it, but I'm trying to figure out whether that's just the wound hurting or if I still have a tiny piece of glass I'm lodging deeper into my foot by walking on it.
