I feel like people can actually see stuff and hallucinate, from the way they speak about it. Maybe some are just pulling my leg, but I've never been able to see something that isn't there. Someone has told me they were sleepy enough to see a person crawling on the hood of their car when driving.
When I close my eyes, there is nothing but darkness. I can think about an apple in my head and kinda have a thought process of what it might visibly look like, but it doesn't ever seem to be a concrete image. I would compare it to something like a very very transparent overlay in my mind's eye. And even then, my eyes would have to be looking away and probably cross or warp.
The only time I've ever been able to somewhat picture anything in the darkness is when I was on psychedelics. I could actually see gears turning if my eyes were shut. Open it was still like an overlay, but a bit more clear or things were shape-shifting. The one time I peaked it just felt like life was enhanced or upgraded, but I wasn't exactly seeing anything unusual.
Is my brain weak and dull? I have had dreams before and I've always thought myself to be a creative type of person because I like art and writing. Maybe I lack this sense.
