I'm looking for an answer more than just 'because he was the best/most gifted opera singer', because while that explains why he is/was more well known than his peers, it seems to me like Pavarotti is a name well known even to most people who have no interest in opera. I feel like most people have heard of Pavarotti even if they couldn't name a single other opera singer (I know I couldn't name more than like two or three at most but I can't remember a time when I hadn't heard of Pavarotti.) How did he manage to become so famous that he sort of transcended his art and made it into the public consciousness?
