How come college sports are so big in the US?

It just feels like such a weird thing to me as a Brit, over here the biggest university level sport is probably the annual boat race down the Thames of Oxford vs Cambridge but there’s no massive sports things like you wouldn’t get big sport events but college American football is massive and I just don’t see the appeal
