How are people affording these house prices?

I live in an area where houses are going for 230 a sq ft. My wife and I make a good middle income living. We believe we are making more than many of our friends (anecdotal) and they are all buying into these houses where the mortgage would be 3200 . I keep running the numbers and it just isn’t viable for us. One lady we know gets Medicaid. It’s all very frustrating. How are people doing it?
