What prevented Luke Perry from becoming a movie star at the peak of his fame in the early 90s due to the massive popularity of Beverly Hills, 90210?

Just read his memoir and seen some of his interviews from back then, the guy was on tons of magazine covers and on multiple talk shows/late night shows. Arguably a pretty big tv star albeit appealing to teenagers. During the time of the show he did films like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 8 Seconds and Normal Life.
Was he ultimately just typecast as a teen idol? Did he lose out on movie roles to bigger stars like Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp or even Christian Slater?
