Why is a schizophrenic symptom “substance abuse” in some sources?

I was recently doing research on schizophrenia and discovered some websites say “substance abuse” is a symptom, i am confused to why that would be a symptom despite it being something anyone could do. I’m just a little lost here, thank you.
