If you're in hospital and someone calls to enquire if you're there, will you be informed?

I'm writing a story at the moment and am trying to work out how it would work if a character asks if they've been admitted as to whether the patient would be informed that someone is asking about them? I'm also assuming that they wouldn't be able to actually visit the ward unless the patient said it was ok? Never been in this scenario, and all my Google searches are coming back to tell me it from the perspective of the enquirer, not the patient. I'm in the UK but honestly any answers would be really helpful
