How reliable exactly are surveys where people then mention what perecnt of the population feels this or that?

They are quite frequent. And are sometimes used as evidence on whether an opinion is becoming more popular or not. That said, it isn't clear how honest participants are nor is it possible to ask every single person. And there is a tendency for surveys to confirm either the current status quo or a currently popular trend. To what extent are surveys reliable?
