Why do we sometimes talk to our pets as if they understand everything we're saying?

Today, while walking on the sidewalk with a bag full of apples, a pet dog suddenly bit the bag and took out three apples. The owner began to berate the dog as if it were a human child and tried to teach it manners using human language. What’s the point of that?
