Why do people text weird when they're in a bad mood?

It sounds confusing, but I don't really understand when like a friend of mine texts really aggressively or short, etc., and then when I ask why they are typing like that they say they're in a bad mood and apologize for being mean/rude/etc. It's a conscious choice to type your words and hit send, so why type them in a way you know isn't kind?? Why answer the texts at all?? Does everyone do this?? When I'm in a bad mood, I will communicate that and not reply for a bit, or just text as normal.
