Can I ask nurses to not throw out soiled stuff in the room?
Post Body

Hey all.

So my dad is currently hospitalized after having a stroke. He’s on the mend, but still paralyzed in spots and doesn’t have feeling in his tummy, he can tell once he’s gone to the bathroom, but not while it’s happening.

Anyways, if it happens, nurses clean him up and all. But, sometimes the nurses will toss the wipes or soiled diapers into the trash bin in his room instead of the specific soiled can in the hallway. This causes the smell to linger for a while, sometimes so bad my family and I have to exit the room (not my dads fault, it’s what we do), but my poor dad can’t physically leave the room.

My mom stepped out of the room today (I wasn’t there) while they were cleaning him, went back in, and stepped right back out. A nurse told her she could go back in and she told them it smelled too bad to be in there and the nurse took the soiled stuff out of my dads bin and put it in the soiled bin outside.

I’m wondering 1) Are they even allowed to do that? Isn’t that what the soiled bin is for? 2) Can we ask them to not leave it in his room?

Sure, we can step out, but A) we shouldn’t have to and B) my dad can’t step out. He’s paralyzed.

Just wondering if we would be allowed to ask that without causing any trouble. I don’t work in health care so I have no idea.

Thanks!
