Why do regular browsers not connect to .onion sites?

You need TOR or similar special browsers to connect to https://www.reddittorjg6rue252oqsxryoxengawnmo46qy4kyii5wtqnwfj4ooad.onion for example. But when you connect using a normal browser, what happens? Does the browser see .onion and then refuse to connect? Or are these sites written in a special .onion language that normal browsers do not speak? What happens on the technical side when you try to visit a .onion on a normal browser?
