How does AWOL/desertion/other actually work?

I saw the below post on r/legaladvice , and I kind of got confused. So I've read about AWOL/desertion and stuff in the context of war... all very bad things and punished harshly. But what about in cases like below, where you... sort of just don't show up?

The post is kind of vague and locked, but don't show up for training? Don't show after training? etc...
