Is backcrossing the new word for inbreeding?

Was reading about the history of the sphynx cat on Wikipedia and saw this where a kitten was mated to their mother "called backcrossing".
Isn't that just inbreeding? Or have they come up with a new word for it?
Sounds like a terrible way to make a new breed. Many kittens died and had health issues.
