Why do some people think that Spanish is native to Mexico?

Considering that "Spanish" is the name, and Mexico was conquered by Spain (and white Spaniards speak Spanish), it seems pretty obvious that Spanish came from Spain. But some people seem to think that Mexicans originally spoke Spanish, or they even call Spanish "Mexican." Why is this?
