Why is the society in Brave New World considered dystopian or bad?

Maybe I'm just really dumb, but I'm having a hard time understanding how the society is objectively bad. Everyone seems happy, and their needs are met. Even if they are technically controlled by the government, I'm trying to understand why it really matters as long as they are ultimately happy.
Isn't this basically utilitarian ethics? Is the book arguing against utilitarianism?
