Why do some people seem to see sex as a very personal thing, but other people don't?

Are we taught to see it as a personal/private/deep thing, or does that come naturally to us? Are we ingrained by culture/religion to see sex as something intimate/meaningful with someone special? Is having sex without feeling normal/natural, or are people like that suppressing their true feelings? Thoughts?
