Is it true that a guy has to like the girl more first in order for a relationship to be successful?

My parents told me that the boys who like the girl first and actively pursues them will result in a good relationship whereas the girl who goes after the guy doesn’t work out as much. I feel like I’ve been seeking the latter, where I just wait until the girl shows interest me and then I make my move, but after hearing that I think I might just be a wuss.
Also I’m just asking if this is true in GENERAL as I know there are some special cases
