American tipping culture
Post Body

I’ve recently been to America (loved it) but I don’t understand why tips are automatically applied at every place I went too .. I completely understand the option to at the end of receiving the service but having to pay before even receiving a coffee / a meal I don’t get it?! How do I know if I will enjoy it / if you’ll be a good server beforehand? Also something being advertised as one price then when I went to pay it had tax , card fees and a tip on top why is the tax not already included in the price (asking as they do this in the UK and it makes sense because you know exactly the amount you are paying) also that tips are expected in every place I went too (asking as in the UK it is optional) has it always been like this? Also please note it’s not me being tight I tipped / paid whatever fees every single time I just wanted some clarification.
