Was it ever unacceptable to romanticize certain things that are acceptable today?

Such as pirates and western bandits who committed atrocities in the past but today are popular in games and movies. In their day, did people consider romanticizing them insensitive or anything? What's the reason nobody today dislikes it despite the atrocities they did?
