Mutually assured destruction, is nukes really the best option?

Okay so nukes is generally considered the ultimate thing to do that, I kinda disagree that this is the best weapon for mutually assured destruction.

Would it not be feasable to develop a weapon that would blot out the sun, toss the planet into a forever ice age of -50 degrees be way more effective to guarantee it?

I dunno but nukes doesn't seem like the world ending tool to me... Some are gonna survive a nuke but a forever ice age? Probably not unless they have some bunker and prepared for this, however these will eventually fail to...
